Dr Jane Mavoa

Senior Researcher

Jane is a highly experienced researcher with over a decade of quantitative, qualitative and academic research under her belt.

Jane is particularly interested in designing technology with children's rights in mind — their right to play and socialise, their privacy rights and the design and ethical considerations that protect children from commercial exploitation.

With her work, Jane has sought to understand changes to children's media use during the extended COVID lockdowns in Victoria, the barriers to digital inclusion with a focus on affordability barriers, and ethical and privacy issues associated with domestic data sharing.

Jane's research has included working with the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child, the Centre of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Ethics, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), the University of Sydney, the University of Melbourne and the Murdoch Children's Research Institute.

Jane has a a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction and a Bachelor with Honours in Science, specialising in Psychology. She has presented her work at numerous conferences, including the Australian and New Zealand Communications Association, the Digital Games Research Association of Australia, and at the play thread of the ACM Conference on Computer Human Interaction (CHI). Jane regularly participates in panel discussions contributing to conversations about play and ethical considerations surrounding virtual reality, including Melbourne Knowledge Week and Melbourne International Games Week.

We pay our respects to the traditional custodians of the lands on which we live and work, and to the traditional custodians of the lands and waters which we may visit upon in our work. We acknowledge their elders past and present. Indigenous sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was, and always will be Aboriginal land.
