Why has education changed so little?

Found at Overland
As a parent, I spend considerable time thinking about education. The school year has just kicked off and I am full of hope for the year of learning that lies ahead.

Education has changed since I attended school many many years ago, but I don’t believe it has transformed. The design of conventional education is heavily weighted to cater for the neurotypical and the physically able. Neurodivergent kids, including those with autism, ADHD and dyslexia, are often extremely bright but placed in a system that is unintentionally designed for them to struggle. We say that all children have the right to education but what kind of education are we talking about, and is it really for everyone?

This article offers an insightful perspective into what would make education transformative, as opposed to just additive (that is, seeing children as empty containers to which knowledge must be added). It also acknowledges that the real reason education hasn’t transformed are ongoing societal assumptions about the role of education and a deep fear of challenges to power structures.

We pay our respects to the traditional custodians of the lands on which we live and work, and to the traditional custodians of the lands and waters which we may visit upon in our work. We acknowledge their elders past and present. Indigenous sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was, and always will be Aboriginal land.
