The Māori language app helping Kiwis connect with Indigenous culture

The newly developed Kupu app lets you take a photo with your device, and then uses Google-powered image recognition to provide the name for it in English and Māori. 80,000 people downloaded the app in its first week.

The technology behind it could work just as well to help people learn other languages, and Aboriginal academic Dr Raymond Kelly would like to see something similar tried in Australia. In the meantime, here are over 30 Aboriginal mobile apps that help you experience culture, explore stories or learn an Aboriginal language.
