How to stop freaking out and tackle climate change

Found at the New York Times.
In a lot of my work life, the overriding theme has been working with people to help them “stop freaking out and tackle the problem at hand”.

So I found this article really interesting, partly because it’s great to see people writing about the possibility of effective action, but also because the five steps it recommends are equally applicable to any complex problem that would benefit from collaboration. It just so happens that climate change is the most complex problem that we all face right now, and we need to collaborate effectively if we want things to change.

The five steps are:

  • Ditch the shame
  • Focus on systems, not yourself
  • Join an effective group
  • Define your role
  • Know what you are fighting for, not just what you are fighting against

“Instead of trying to become an expert (...) you can offer the skills and resources you already have, and trust that other people with complementary skills are doing what they can do, too.”
